Low Cost Counseling
do you have a high deductible insurance plan, no insurance, or insurance that is not widely accepted?
The Healing Tree is proud to host Masters Level student interns, who are able to provide low cost individual therapy sessions. A Master’s Level student typically has about one year of practicum experience under their belt before coming to The Healing Tree, and works closely with both their Field Instructor and the rest of the team to bring their classroom knowledge into an on-the-ground setting. Our interns typically come from either Rutgers University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program or The College of New Jersey’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
Rutgers University’s MSW program with a focus on trauma-informed care. In the Certificate in Interpersonal Violence and Trauma program, students take coursework geared towards a deeper understanding of the impact of trauma on behavior, attachment, mood, and functioning. They learn about policies affecting victims and survivors of abuse and trauma as well as theories that guide the evidence based approaches they bring to their field practicum experience.
The College of New Jersey’s MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) program is a CACREP-accredited program that emphasizes a strong foundation in clinical skills, ethics, and trauma-informed care. Students can choose a specialization in either generalist practice or addiction counseling while engaging in coursework focused on case conceptualization, psychopathology, and evidence-based counseling approaches. Courses are geared toward developing practical, client-centered skills, with an emphasis on assessment, treatment planning, and real-world application. This training helps students understand how mental health concerns impact behavior, relationships, and overall functioning. Graduates are prepared to work in community mental health centers, hospitals, and private practice.
Session fees for working with a graduate intern range from $40 per session to $0, based on your specific needs. To inquire about setting up an appointment with our current intern, please contact admin@thehealingtreecc.org or (732) 672-8754.
What can i expect when working with an intern?
We are proud to be a part of the shaping of the next generation of trauma-informed therapists. Our interns work closely in supervision with a senior therapist on our team who has been specifically trained in supervising graduate students. Interns meet for weekly supervision and are provided with a wealth of training from our entire team before beginning their first client sessions. An intern’s supervisor will occasionally sit in on a session to help the interns build their clinical skillset and their insight into the cases they are working on in an effort to provide the highest quality care possible.
In order to determine if an intern will be a good fit for you, our intern supervisor and clinical director work together to make sure that referrals match the intern’s skillset, areas of interest, and training prior to making a referral. You will have direct access to the intern’s supervisor if you do have any questions along the way!
Because our interns are students, this means that they are with us from late August/early September through late April. As the school year comes to a close, it is a top priority to make sure that if you need continuing care, you are linked with a referral prior to your last session!

Hello! My name is Emily Abrams, and I am pursuing my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at The College of New Jersey. I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Media/Journalism and Interpersonal Communications from La Salle University. My interest in counseling sparked while working for a company that developed science-backed emotional intelligence and social activity kits and tools for children. Seeing first-hand how these tools strengthened emotional learning inspired me to support others as they grow and develop confidence in themselves.
I am interested in working with a wide range of populations, including children, adolescents, young adults, and families who may be navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions, or relationship challenges. I strive to create a warm and welcoming space where you can feel at ease being yourself and sharing what is on your mind. Therapy is a collaborative process, and my role is to listen with empathy, offer guidance, and help you feel empowered as we work toward positive change together.
I am also a creative person who loves painting, writing, music, and art, and I strongly believe in the healing power of creativity and self-expression. Above all, I value hearing people’s stories and recognize the courage it takes to be vulnerable. I am here to walk with you as you gain new skills and move toward becoming the best version of yourself.
